The Workshop Component
The workshop sessions begin the fifth week of the quarter. A complete workshop consists of approximately 3 separate sessions totaling 6-8 hours. The sessions are led by Workshop Leaders (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and senior technicians) who conduct research projects in an area of science or engineering related to the class. During the sessions the Workshop Leaders describe the organization of the laboratory in which they work, the overall goals of the research done in the laboratory, and engage the students in a project on which they are working. In addition to teaching what is done in the laboratory and why it is done, the Workshop Leaders teach how the experiments are done. The students are given an opportunity to participate directly in the laboratory procedures. Once you have completed the workshop you will be asked to write an essay in non-technical terms describing your workshop experience.
